Locals Launch Peel Street Ice Hockey League After Light Downpour

Tamworth’s iconic Peel Street has once again lived up to its reputation this morning, with just a light drizzle turning the CBD’s main drag into what locals are describing as “the slickest ice rink this side of Moscow.”

After a light overnight downpour, multiple pedestrians were seen this morning sliding majestically down the uneven tiles, with several shopfronts offering complimentary band-aids as part of a new civic tradition.

“It’s basically like Disney On Ice out here, except instead of princesses and fireworks it’s just blokes in steel-caps and pensioners with their shopping trolleys,” said local resident Trevor, who admitted he hadn’t had this much fun since the Coles car park flooded in 2011.

Others have already turned the hazard into a competitive sport.

“I managed a clean 14-metre slide from the ANZ to the kebab shop,” boasted self-proclaimed Peel Street champion Danny. “Would’ve gone further if I didn’t clip an old fella’s walking stick. Reckon I’ll train up for the Brisbane Olympics.”

“I saw a kid do a triple spin near the Commonwealth Bank,” reported hairdresser Kylie. “Ten out of ten from me. Shame about the landing though, right into the pot plant.”

Business owners are also embracing the chaos.

“Mate, I’ve already hired a bloke with a speaker to play Boléro while people stack it in front of the newsagency,” said café owner Michelle. “We’re thinking of charging for skate hire, or just waxing up some volleys.”

Tourism officials are reportedly considering leaning into the new identity, with early billboard concepts boasting:

“Tamworth — Country Music, Golden Guitars, And The Southern Hemisphere’s Longest Outdoor Skating Rink.”

This is a fake story and does not reflect reality.
