Tamworth Surf Club Proudly Supports Annual Youth Tradition Of Mistaking Peel Street For Surfers Paradise
The town’s quiet weeknights are about to be interrupted once again, with Year 12 students set to take part in the annual Treasure Hunt — the traditional farewell event that involves ticking off a chaotic checklist of late-night tasks while running purely on adrenaline and KFC gravy.
The event, which begins after dark when absolutely nothing in Tamworth is open, sees freshly graduated teens roam the streets in convoys of half-broken Corollas and Commodores, completing challenges that usually end with at least one person chundering in Bicentennial Park.
This year’s Treasure Hunt is proudly sponsored by the Tamworth Surf Club — an organisation bafflingly located several hundred kilometres from the nearest wave. As part of their sponsorship, the Surf Club has provided every participant with a Peelie Permit: a prized sticker for the windscreen granting full rights to endlessly lap Peel Street at 10km/h while blasting Peking Duk out of $40 speakers from Supercheap Auto.
“It’s about tradition,” explained one Surf Club spokesperson. “We may not have surf, but these kids ride their own kind of wave — mainly powered by V Energy, poor decisions, and family sedans their parents definitely don’t know are out tonight.”
Police have pre-emptively issued a statement urging “responsibility and restraint,” but admitted there’s not much they can do. One officer told The Misinformation:
“Once those Peelie Permits come out, Peel Street becomes basically the Summernats. All we can do is stand back and pray they don’t end up in the KFC drive-thru kerb again.”
While the official checklist of tasks is kept under wraps, past years have seen students attempt everything from “cram 12 people into a Falcon for a lap,” to “see how many gravies you can drink before blackout,” and the notorious “convince a servo worker to let you buy just one nugget.”
One soon-to-be graduate summed up the spirit of the night while lining up for a test lap of Peel Street:
“It’s not about winning. It’s about being able to tell your kids you did the Treasure Hunt before Peel Street was gentrified with vape shops and acai bowls”.
This is not true. Tamworth Surf Club are not doing anything remotely suggested in this article. If you want a Peelie Permit, you gotta pay for it.
